Athens Backpackers

The best time to visit Athens is from late April to June and September to early October, when temperatures are pleasant (20-29°C) and rain is infrequent. July is the hottest month, with highs around 35°C, while November and December are the rainiest, with 9 rain days each. May and June offer long, sunny days ideal for sightseeing, and September remains warm with fewer crowds. Avoid the peak heat of July and the wetter late autumn months for the most comfortable experience.

Plaka is the historic heart, ideal for first-timers wanting to be steps from the Acropolis and lively streets. Syntagma suits those who prefer central convenience and easy transit access. Kolonaki offers a more upscale, residential feel with chic cafes and boutiques. For a quieter, more local vibe, consider Neos Kosmos, which is well-connected and close to the city center.

The Acropolis of Athens is the ancient citadel with the Parthenon, its most iconic temple. The Acropolis Museum houses the site's original sculptures and artifacts. The Panathenaic Stadium is the marble venue of the first modern Olympics. The Ancient Agora was the city's political and commercial heart, with the Temple of Olympian Zeus nearby as a colossal ruin. Philopappos Hill offers a close view of the Acropolis and the city.

You can take a full-day tour to Meteora, known for its monasteries perched on rock pillars. Another option is a cruise to the islands of Agistri, Moni, and Aegina, offering a taste of the Saronic Gulf. A tour to Mycenae, Epidaurus, and Nafplion covers ancient ruins and a seaside town. A private tour of Athens itself is also available, but for a day trip beyond the city, the first three are your choices.

Plan 3 to 4 days in Athens. In 3 days, you can see the Acropolis, Parthenon, Acropolis Museum, Ancient Agora, Temple of Olympian Zeus, and Panathenaic Stadium, plus stroll the National Garden and Philopappos Hill. Add a fourth day for a relaxed pace or to visit the Varvakios Market and Odeon of Herodes Atticus. If you take a day trip to Meteora or the islands, add one more day.
