Lovely ryokan in Beppu, room is very spacious with western or japanese style beds to choose as sleeping option in the room. Sound of waterfall from room terrace is very relaxing. Onsen is very soothing

Our stay at Beppu Showaen was honestly unforgettable, one of the most peaceful and luxurious experiences we had in Japan. It truly felt like stepping into a private sanctuary. The traditional setting, beautiful gardens, and thoughtful details made everything feel so intentional and special. The private open-air onsen was definitely a highlight. If I remember correctly, you do need to reserve it for an hour (bet 3pm–9pm), but it’s absolutely worth it. There’s also a shared onsen separated by gender. On our second night, it rained, so we ended up enjoying the cypress bath in our room, which honestly felt just as special as the outdoor private onsen. The water comes straight from the mountains, which made the whole experience even more unique. The staff truly went above and beyond. The only small downside was the walk to the nearest bus stop, it’s about 19 minutes, which can be a bit inconvenient. That said, they do offer a free shuttle service, which really helps and makes getting around much easier. Overall, Beppu Showaen is such a beautiful place to unwind and experience traditional Japanese hospitality. We would absolutely stay here again.

The surrounding nature of the Ryokan is stunning - you have the rushing water just outside your balcony. There are two private onsens you can book and there is a public onsen available as well. Firstly be warned if you booked on booking.com. We were too late in realising we only booked the room. When we got there for check in, they said that dinner and breakfast was closed and we couldn’t be added which was a massive shame as we had booked thinking we got the whole experience. Disappointed that we couldn’t be added on. When looking more into the buildings, it’s actually quite old, old tv’s, bedding and bathroom. It could use a little updating that still holds the charm. We’ve come in summer so the open air onsens are perfect - however I would be cautious coming in winter as there doesn’t seem to be heating in the changing facilities. There also seems to be minimal staff, we only saw two workers and we wondered if that’s why we couldn’t be added on for dinner and breakfast. It was a beautiful, relaxing place to stay but it simply needs an update and more accommodating.

We planned our entire Japan trip so that we could stay in the most exclusive room at this property with the waterfall view and private outdoor onsen. It was absolutely stunning. One of the most incredible experiences of our lives. The Kaiseki dinner and breakfast were also one of the best if not the best unforgettable dining experiences of our lives. This is not to mention the friendly staff. The manager of the property Abe picked us up at the train station and drove us back on our departure. We recommend this property to everyone who wishes to experience Japanese hospitality.

This place is quiet and relaxing but it is 21 mins away by foot from the next bus stop to town. However, you can ask front desk to pick you up and drop you off beppu station upon arrival/departure. Our room came with indoor onsen but you can book a private onsen from 1400-2200. Our room came in with the tea area as well which we enjoyed. You can also add breakfast and dinner to your reservation for the full experience. If you do not, the closest convenience store is 14 minutes away by foot.

Beautiful location with stunning views and settings. Being right by the bridge, stream, bamboo and tree forests surrounding. It’s a very peaceful setting. The house we stayed in was beautiful and spacious with a lovely balcony with great views. The private baths were bookable and complimentary, they were a lovely setting and nice and warm. Really happy with our stay.

A great place to relax and get away without being too far from the city. It's a nice 20 min walk to the station. Precaution, ride shares rarely start in the area so you will have to call a taxi if you don't want to walk. Getting a taxi back is no problem. Breakfast was amazing. I recommend adding it to your reservation. Staff was wonderful. They work really hard to make our stay incredible!

Dishonest business. I booked via booking.com and two days after, the hotel informed me the price is now 4 times the original price. Booking.com price has just doubled but hotel was giving me the option of paying 4 times the original rate or to cancel my booking. I told them I won’t be paying more and they just cancelled my booking. Are these people robbers? And I have written to booking.com 5 times to resolve the issue and they are ignoring me.
