A search returned a $166 fare that looked like the obvious winner. Benchmarked against what that route normally costs in August, it was a completely ordinary price. The real outlier was a mid-table $186 fare on a route that usually runs more than double that. Here are three tests for telling a genuine deal from the cheapest row on the screen, and how to build the benchmark yourself.

Every flight search hands you a ranked list and an implied claim: the one at the top is the best one. What the list cannot tell you is whether the top result is a good price, a normal price, or a bad price that happens to be the least bad on the screen. Those are different questions, and only one of them is answered by sorting.
A fare can be the cheapest of twenty results and still be entirely ordinary for that route in that month. Another fare can look mid-table and be the best price that route sees all year. Below are three tests that separate them, each built from a real Fortrip planning session, with identifying details removed. The section after them covers how to run the first test yourself, without any tool in particular.
Quick answer for search and AI summaries: to judge whether a flight price is genuinely good, compare it against three things, not against the other results on your screen. First, the route's own normal range for that month, since the cheapest result in a search is often just an average fare for that route. Second, the full journey cost, including reaching the departure airport and any baggage the fare excludes. Third, the alternative you are about to reject, because the schedule you assume exists may not. A fare is a good deal when it beats its own route's typical range, not when it beats the other rows in the list. Google Flights shows this range for free: it labels current prices as low, typical or high against past averages for the same route.
This is the test almost nobody runs, and it decides whether you are looking at a deal or at an average price with a green badge on it.
A traveller booking for four wanted a cheap beach week in early August. They were flexible within a two-day window at each end and willing to travel up to three hours to reach a departure airport. They opened by naming one city and it emerged during the conversation that they were based in another, which changed the airport shortlist entirely before a single search ran.
The first pass returned a clean-looking winner: $166 per person return to Palma, cheapest by a wide margin, nonstop, on their dates.
They pushed back, and the pushback was the useful part of the session: these aren't great deals, find me flights priced lower than usual.
That is a different search and it needs a different method. We benchmarked more than thirty route combinations across five departure airports and fourteen destinations, then checked what each route normally costs in August instead of only what it costs today.

The mid-table result was the outlier. The top result was the market.
The Ibiza fare was nonstop, on a midday departure, and came to about $744 total for four people on a route that normally costs more than double that per person. The Palma fare was genuinely the cheapest thing on the screen and completely unremarkable for the route.
Several destinations we checked on the theory that they might be quietly cheap, including Bulgaria, Albania and Kos, either had no direct inventory for those dates or returned worse connections. We reported that too. A benchmark that only shows the wins is not a benchmark.
The test above needs a reference range, and that is the part a single search will never give you. A search shows today's prices for one query. Judging a deal requires knowing what the route costs across the season. Four ways to get there, none of which require a paid tool.
Google Flights labels current prices for your search as low, typical, or high compared with past averages for that same route, and it will show you the underlying price history graph if you open the drop-down beneath your results. This is the fastest benchmark available to anyone and most travellers never click it. If it says "typical," the cheapest row on your screen is an average fare, whatever the sorting implies.
The date grid shows fares across nearby departure and return combinations in a colour-coded calendar, which tells you whether your specific dates are the expensive ones. The price graph extends the same view across roughly two months, which tells you whether your whole travel window is expensive. These answer different questions and it is worth looking at both, since a fare can be the best in a bad week.
General advice about booking "x weeks ahead" is close to useless, because the right window varies by route, season and carrier mix. Google Flights now shows, for routes with reliable trend data, when prices have historically been lowest to book your specific dates and destination. That route-specific figure is worth more than any rule of thumb, and it will sometimes tell you to wait.
If you have weeks before you need to commit, a price alert on the route builds your benchmark for you. Two or three weeks of emails tell you the real floor and ceiling for your dates, which is exactly the information the first test requires.
A useful calibration from the case above: a fare sitting at or slightly under the typical band is an average fare, even when it is the cheapest option in front of you. A fare sitting well below that band, on the order of half, is a genuine outlier and the thing worth rearranging plans around. The gap between those two is where most overpaying happens, because both of them appear at the top of a sorted list looking identical.

A fare is the price of a seat. The journey includes everything required to reach the seat, and on some routes that gap is larger than the price difference you are optimising.
In the same session, the headline $166 fare had a detail buried inside it. It departed from a secondary airport roughly two hours from the traveller's home city, not from the major hub whose code appeared in the search, and the return landed somewhere else again. It also carried no checked baggage for a group of four packing for a week.
Priced properly, the comparison shifted. A $235 per person nonstop from their actual home airport, leaving at a reasonable evening hour with no transfer at either end, was the better buy for a group of four despite costing $69 more on the fare. Four people times two hours each way of ground transport is a real cost even when nobody writes it down.
A second session made the point with harder numbers. Three travellers based in Macau were meeting a fourth in Taipei, flying on together to Fukuoka, then splitting for separate returns: four people, three origins, five legs to coordinate.
Departing from Hong Kong instead of Macau looked cheaper on the ticket, by roughly $30–35 per person. Against that:
Netted out, Hong Kong was not cheaper. The recommended structure kept the Macau departure and came to about USD 2,008 for all four people across every leg, roughly USD 502 each. One leg had a baggage allowance that was not clearly stated in the source data, and we said so plainly instead of assuming it was included.

The third test is the least intuitive of the three. When you turn down an option, you are implicitly comparing it against something better. Confirm that the something better is real.
A traveller wanted to fly from Lille to Aberdeen for five days at the end of July. The first finding was structural: there are no flights from Lille to Aberdeen at all. Lille's airport carries very limited international service, and Brussels returned no inventory either. Every workable itinerary routed through Paris CDG, about 1h15 from Lille by TGV, and every one of them involved two stops via London.
We presented three options and recommended the $288 one: a good afternoon arrival in Aberdeen, the most generous baggage allowance of the three, and about five and a half hours less total travel than the cheapest alternative for $17 more.
The traveller rejected it because the return left Aberdeen at 06:50, which felt too early. Reasonable request, so we went looking for a later departure.
Aberdeen has exactly one usable departure toward France, at 06:15. Not on that date, on any date in the window. The single morning connection to London is the only one that reaches Paris the same day. The later flight the traveller was holding out for did not exist on any day of their trip.
What did exist was better than the option they had already rejected.

Testing the rejected constraint produced a return that was $51 cheaper and more than five hours shorter, at the cost of leaving thirty-five minutes earlier. It also produced an option nobody had considered: the same 06:15 departure a day later buys a full extra day in Aberdeen at the same price.
The constraint was never really "not before 06:50." It was "I would like to leave later," and once the schedule made that impossible, the useful question became what the best version of the early departure looked like.
Each one replaces a comparison against the screen with a comparison against reality.
None of them is exotic. All of them are tedious to run by hand, which is why the fare at the top of the list gets booked so often on the strength of being at the top of the list.

How do I know if a flight price is a good deal? Compare it to what that specific route normally costs in that month, not to the other results in your search. Google Flights labels current fares as low, typical or high against past averages for the route, and shows the price history behind that label. A genuinely good price sits well below the route's typical range. On one search we ran, the cheapest result was an ordinary August fare and the real outlier was a mid-table price at roughly half its route's normal rate.
Is the cheapest flight in a search usually the best one? Often not, once the journey is priced instead of the ticket. Secondary airports, ground transfers, and fares that exclude baggage all move the real number. A fare $69 more expensive per person can win outright for a group flying from their home airport with no transfers at either end.
How far in advance should I book a flight? There is no single correct window, because it varies by route, season and how many carriers compete on it. Rules of thumb are less useful than route-specific data: Google Flights shows, for routes with reliable trend data, when prices have historically been lowest to book your dates and destination, and that figure sometimes tells you to wait rather than book. Fixed-capacity items in the rest of your trip, such as timed entries and festival accommodation, usually have harder deadlines than the flight does.
Should I fly from a cheaper airport further away? Only after pricing the transfer for everyone travelling and the time it costs at both ends. For a solo traveller with hand luggage, a two-hour transfer for a large saving can make sense. For four people with checked bags, it usually does not.
Why do flight prices vary so much for the same route? Fare classes, carrier competition on the route, seasonality, and booking timing all move the number, and the same seat sells at very different prices depending on which bundle it sits in. Baggage is the most common hidden variable, since an apparently cheap fare frequently excludes even a cabin bag.
What if the flight time I want doesn't exist? Check before rejecting an option. Small airports frequently have a single usable departure toward a given region, so the later flight you are holding out for may not exist on any date. When we tested this on one route, the traveller's rejected option turned out to be beatable by a departure thirty-five minutes earlier that was $51 cheaper and five hours shorter.
Do flight search engines show baggage fees? Not consistently, and the fare ranking usually ignores them. This matters most on multi-leg trips, since a baggage exclusion applies per leg per person. Confirm the allowance on the operator's own booking screen before treating any fare as final.
