Lake Engolasters

Perched at 1,616 meters in the Pyrenees, Lake Engolasters is Andorra's only glacial lake located below 2,000 meters, offering a serene escape just minutes from the capital. With its deep blue waters reflecting the surrounding pine forests and snow-capped peaks, it serves as a tranquil backdrop for hiking, history, and legend. This picturesque reservoir is not just a natural wonder but a hub of activity, featuring a shoreline hiking trail, trout fishing spots, and the historic Sant Miquel d’Engolasters church nearby. The lake's unique blend of natural beauty and industrial heritage, marked by its 1934 dam, makes it a compelling destination for families and adventurers alike.

Estany Basseta

Estany Basseta is one of Andorra's small high-mountain tarns, a still glacial pool tucked into the rugged lake country of the country's south-east, on the Escaldes-Engordany and Encamp side of the Pyrenean crest. Reached on foot and set well above the tree line, it belongs to the cluster of granite cirques and mirror-like ponds that make this corner of the principality a quiet playground for hikers. The name 'basseta' simply means a little pond, and that is exactly what you find here: a compact sheet of dark water fringed by rock and alpine pasture, in the company of several other tarns. The payoff is not one grand lake but the feeling of a whole high landscape at your feet — open water, wind-scoured granite and long views toward the ski ridges of Grandvalira and the road that climbs toward France.

Mirador de Riu Runer (La Rabassa)

Set in the heart of the La Rabassa forest above the parish of Sant Julià de Lòria, the Mirador de Riu Runer is a small scenic lookout that rewards a short, gentle walk with one of the broadest views in southern Andorra. From its stone platform you look out over the Valira valley and the eastern valleys (the Valls d'Orient), with the silhouette of the Pic de Carroi and the Serra d'Enclar rising in the distance and the town of Sant Julià spread out far below. The viewpoint sits above the Riu Runer, the river that, until it joins the Valira, forms the border with Spain. That frontier position gives the spot both its name and a quietly dramatic past: this stretch of river was once a crossing route for Andorran smugglers heading into Catalan territory. Reaching the mirador takes about twenty minutes along an easy, mostly flat forest path, making it a popular short outing for families and for anyone staying near the Naturlandia mountain resort.
