Kōh-e Shah Ghilā Bābā
Koh-e Shah Ghila Baba rises to roughly 2,640 metres in the dry highlands of Farah province in western Afghanistan. The name carries the echo of a saint or spiritual father — baba appears across Persian and Dari place-names as a marker of Sufi shrines and sacred hillsides — and the peak sits far from any tourist trail, deep in a landscape of scrubland, seasonal streams, and windswept ridgelines that most travel maps leave blank. For the traveller who seeks genuine remoteness, this is as off-the-map as a named summit can get. No recorded climbs appear on peak-tracking databases, no lodges dot its flanks, and the nearest infrastructure is whatever village you can find down in the wadi. What you do find is silence, stark geology, and the particular clarity of high air over southwestern Afghanistan. The peak earns its place in an itinerary for one reason: it represents the Afghanistan that exists beyond the famous valley of Bamyan and beyond the better-known Koh-e Baba range to the north. If you are assembling a route through the lesser-explored western provinces, Shah Ghila Baba is the kind of waypoint that gives a journey its sense of discovery. In summer, daytime temperatures in the surrounding lowlands can push past 39 degrees Celsius, while nights cool to the mid-20s. The terrain at elevation is arid and exposed, with almost no shade, so timing and preparation matter enormously.
