Tsover Lake
Tsover Lake sits in a forested hollow near the village of Dsegh in Armenia's Lori Province, and it is the kind of place that makes you lower your voice without meaning to. Roughly 250 meters long and 200 meters wide, this small volcanic lake mirrors the surrounding pines and beeches so completely that on a still morning it looks like a second sky has opened beneath the trees. The name Tsover means What makes this lake different from countless other mountain tarns is the layer of literary memory folded into its landscape. Hovhannes Tumanyan, Armenia's most beloved poet, grew up in Dsegh and wrote about Tsover repeatedly. He and friends including Avetik Isahakyan, Alexander Shirvanzade, Vahan Teryan, and the Russian symbolist Valery Bryusov would gather here, finding in its quiet surface a kind of inspiration that still carries when you visit. Since 2008 the lake has been a State Natural Monument, protecting not just the water but the atmosphere of a place that feels like a working draft of a poem you haven't finished reading yet.
