Casona de Castañares
A National Historic Monument built in the early 1700s, the Casona de Castañares is where General Manuel Belgrano and the Army of the North rested the night before the decisive Battle of Salta in February 1813. Today it operates as a free municipal museum in Salta's northern district, guided by adobe walls, a crenellated tower, and an L-shaped gallery that still carry the rhythm of a colonial-era working estate. Inside, five themed rooms take visitors through the independence campaigns, Belgrano's personal legacy, the unsung women who shaped the revolution, and a photographic portrait of old Salta. The atmosphere is one of local pride rather than grand spectacle — a place where school groups, history buffs, and families can wander at their own pace.
