San Juan de Dios Museum in Camagüey
Tucked into one of Camagüey's most atmospheric corners, the San Juan de Dios Museum lives inside a former convent-hospital on the cobbled Plaza San Juan de Dios. The building has run for centuries as a place of care—first under the Brothers of St John of God, then as a children's hospital—and today it tells the layered story of the city. Its sober colonial architecture, a rare carved sculpture, a front cloister and a triangular back patio make it a rich stop, and a watchtower offers one of the best panoramas over the historic centre. The museum sits at the heart of a square considered the best-preserved pocket of Camagüey, itself part of a UNESCO World Heritage historic centre. It pairs naturally with the adjoining 18th-century church, and with local art shows, didactic walks and a panorama deck, it rewards both history buffs and casual wanderers.
