Southsea Rock GardenS
Tucked between the breezy seafront promenade and Clarence Esplanade in Southsea, the Rock Gardens are a hidden green sanctuary that most beachgoers walk right past. Built in 1928 from vast blocks of water-worn Westmorland limestone, this 1.35-hectare ornamental garden was once claimed to be the largest artificially constructed rock garden in Great Britain. Today the gardens are a sheltered, tranquil escape from the wide open spaces of Southsea Common — a sunken world of winding paths, cascading ponds, colourful summer planting and remarkable biodiversity, all within a few steps of the sea. A Green Flag Award winner, the site is free to visit and open around the clock, making it one of Portsmouth's most quietly rewarding attractions.
