Ritidian Beach, Scenic Point

Perched where Route 3A tilts down toward Guam's northernmost tip, the Ritidian Beach Scenic Point is the lookout that turns a drive into a destination. From this observation deck you take in the broad white-sand sweep of Ritidian Beach and the jewel-toned water of the open Pacific, and on a clear day you can spot the island of Rota (Luta), some 47 miles to the north—the closest of the Northern Marianas. The view is a promise of what lies just downhill: Ritidian Point, the northern tip of Guam that is at once one of the island's most pristine beaches and a protected unit of the Guam National Wildlife Refuge. Rough seas make swimming a gamble here, but the payoff is the kind of wild, unspoiled coastline Tumon Bay's resort beaches cannot offer.

War in the Pacific National Historical Park

War in the Pacific National Historical Park is a collection of World War II battle sites scattered across the western coastline of Guam, where the brutal 1944 struggle to liberate the island still lingers in coral cliffs, jungle ridges and quiet beaches. Established in 1978 to honor the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought in the Pacific Theater, the park preserves former Imperial Japanese fortifications, American landing beaches and memorials to the soldiers and CHamoru families who lived through the war. It is part museum and part tropical shoreline: you can walk paved paths between gun emplacements one minute, then look out over tide pools and windsurfers on turquoise water the next. For anyone interested in the Pacific war, or simply looking for a meaningful, easy half-day stop with shaded trails and sea views, this park offers a rare chance to stand on the ground where the Battle of Guam was won.

Nimitz Hill

Nimitz Hill is a forested peak rising about 850 feet above the Asan–Maina shoreline in central Guam, in the census community of Nimitz Hill Annex. It takes its name from Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean Areas, who chose this high ground for his advanced war headquarters in December 1944 and moved here in January 1945 to bring his command closer to the front. Today the hilltop is a quiet blend of military housing, Navy commands, and former wartime grounds, but it makes an excellent base for exploring some of Guam's most moving World War II sites. The War in the Pacific National Historical Park's Asan Bay Overlook and Fonte Plateau Unit sit within or just below the hill, the early-1900s Fonte River Dam lies in its ravines, and jungle trails fan out toward waterfalls and ridgeline viewpoints. The payoff of the drive up is the prospect: cool air, open sky, and sweeping views across Apra Harbor, the 1944 landing beaches, and the green hills of southern Guam—the same scenery that made Nimitz call the site "superb."
