Bubaque
There are few places left where you can step off a wooden pier onto a sand track, smell smoked fish drifting from the market, hear a crackling radio playing something between Afrobeat and church hymns, and know you are genuinely at the edge of the tourist map. Bubaque is one of those places. It is the main island of the Bijagós Archipelago off the coast of Guinea-Bissau — a UNESCO-protected biosphere of ninety-three islands — and while it is the most developed and accessible of the lot, it is nothing like a resort island. There is no poolside bar, no all-inclusive buffet, no tour bus. What there is, instead, is a living, breathing island where the Bijagó people still run a matriarchal society, where fishermen haul cast nets at dawn, and where the beaches are wide enough to walk for an hour without seeing another soul. For travelers willing to slow down, Bubaque is the gateway that makes the entire archipelago possible. It has the islands' main port, a handful of guesthouses and eco-lodges, and enough infrastructure to arrange boat trips to Orango's famous saltwater hippos or the turtle-nesting beaches of João Vieira. But the island itself — its mangroves, its tidal flats, its back-street workshops where elders carve masks and weave palm baskets — is worth staying for, not just passing through.
