Al-Shaheed Monument

Two halves of a forty-metre turquoise dome, sliced apart and slid past each other, stand on an island in an artificial lake off Palestine Street in Baghdad. From the road they look closed. As you drive towards them, they open, like a gate preparing to release something. This is Al-Shaheed Monument, the Martyr's Memorial, and it is the single best piece of modern architecture in Iraq. Designed by sculptor Ismail Fatah al-Turk and architect Saman Kamal, completed in 1983, the monument was built to honour the dead of the Iran-Iraq War and has since broadened into a memorial for all Iraqi martyrs. Its split dome evokes Abbasid-era mosque architecture. Between the two shells, a bronze Iraqi flag rises from beneath the earth and a spring of water runs, cutting the noise of the city out entirely. Art in America once rated it the most beautiful design in the Middle East. Here is the honest truth about visiting: the monument belongs to the Martyrs Foundation, a government body that does not publish opening hours or ticket prices, because it does not treat the site as a turnstile attraction. As of 2026, the underground museum has not been demonstrably open to visitors since 2019. Baghdad tour operators still drive people here, and you can see the dome in full from the surrounding parkland, bridges and lake edges. What you cannot count on is going inside.
