Takaya Shrine
Takaya Shrine (竹屋神社, Takaya Jinja) sits in the former Kaseda district of Minamisatsuma, Kagoshima — a quiet, myth-rich site where Japan's founding legends, ancient megalithic worship, and the island's beloved shochu distillation tradition all converge. Locals affectionately call it the Shochu Shrine because the enshrined deities represent the three stages of distillation, making it one of Kyushu's most unique spiritual stops. The shrine's sacred precincts encompass a stone circle and dolmen far older than the wooden halls themselves — a remnant of prehistoric ritual that anchors Takaya as one of southern Kyushu's oldest sites of worship. Combined with charming koma-inu, sand-carved deity figures, free parking, and a shochu display hall next door collecting nearly 600 brands, Takaya offers a surprising depth of character for a town off the main tourist trail.
