Chissioua Ouenefou
Chissioua Ouénéfou is the kind of island most travelers only hear whispers about — a small, volcanic dot in the Mohéli Marine Park where green sea turtles crawl ashore at dusk, rare Livingstone's fruit bats roost in dense evergreen canopy, and the coral reef ringing its coast is among the most spectacular in the entire Comoros archipelago. Sitting just two kilometres off the southern tip of Mohéli, this uninhabited island offers a rare chance to step into a genuinely protected tropical ecosystem where the primary sounds are waves, birdsong, and the occasional splash of a moray eel shifting between reef crevices. The island itself spans roughly 1.5 square kilometres of dark volcanic rock softened by patches of evergreen broadleaf forest, rising to just 52 metres at its highest point. It is compact enough to walk across in under an hour, yet its real drama lives below the waterline, where the protected reef hosts parrotfish, reef sharks, and over a hundred and fifty coral species undisturbed by industrial fishing.
