Fort Rodney

Perched atop Pigeon Island in Gros Islet, Fort Rodney offers one of Saint Lucia’s most rewarding combinations of colonial history and breathtaking Caribbean vistas. This 18th-century British fortification, built in 1778 under Admiral George Rodney, was strategically positioned to monitor French shipping from nearby Martinique. Today, the site has transformed from a military stronghold into a peaceful heritage landmark where visitors can explore stone gun batteries, historic cannons, and underground powder magazines while enjoying panoramic 360-degree views of Rodney Bay, the northwest coast, and, on clear days, the island of Martinique to the north and the Pitons to the south. Reaching the fort involves a scenic but moderately challenging hike through the Pigeon Island National Landmark. The trail winds through dry coastal vegetation and past other historic ruins, culminating in a steep climb to the hilltop parapet. The effort is widely considered worthwhile by visitors, who cite the stunning views and the tangible sense of history as highlights. Whether you are a history buff, a photographer, or simply seeking a unique perspective of Saint Lucia’s coastline, Fort Rodney provides an engaging and memorable experience.

Millet Bird Sanctuary & Nature Trail

In the misty interior highlands of St. Lucia, where the forest climbs toward Mount Gimie and the Roseau Dam spreads like a green mirror below the ridge, there is a 1.75-mile trail that delivers the island's five rarest birds closer than anywhere else. The Millet Bird Sanctuary & Nature Trail winds through thick woodland and opens onto exposed hilltops, and with a forestry guide alongside you, the St. Lucia Parrot — the island's national bird, once nearly lost — can be heard screeching overhead within the first hour. This is not a casual stroll. The path is moderate to strenuous, perched around 1,000 feet above sea level, and it rewards effort with a sweeping view of the John Compton Dam, the largest in the Eastern Caribbean. Over 30 bird species live along the loop, and the five endemics found nowhere else on Earth — Parrot, Oriole, Warbler, Pewee and Black Finch — are the reason birders from across the Caribbean make the drive inland.

Tet Paul Nature Trail

Tet Paul Nature Trail is a short, spectacular hillside walk in the agricultural highlands above Soufrière, St. Lucia, rewarding visitors with a 360-degree panorama of both Gros Piton and Petit Piton, Jalousie Bay, and on clear days even the distant silhouettes of Martinique and St. Vincent. The 1.3 km loop takes about 30 to 45 minutes to complete, but most people linger far longer at the viewpoints and cultural stops along the way. What makes this trail truly special is its community roots: it sits within the Piton Management Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is run by the Soufrière Foundation in partnership with local residents of Chateau Belair. Entry fees go directly to supporting the village, making it one of the most authentic and rewarding experiences on the island.
