Gommolli Kanda
Gommolli Kanda rises 2,034 metres above Sri Lanka's southern hill country, and you can see exactly where it got its name. In Sinhala, Gommolliya means the hump of a bull, and the silhouette of this 13th-highest peak on the island does indeed curl upward like the broad shoulders of an ox grazing against the sky. But the name is only the first clue that this is not your typical postcard viewpoint. Gommolli Kanda is a proper mountain trek, one that earns its rewards through effort rather than a convenient car park. The peak sits on the boundary between Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces near the town of Belihuloya, and reaching its summit means traversing a sequence of ridges that most visitors never even know exist. You can glimpse Gommolli Kanda from World's End at Horton Plains National Park on a clear morning, but actually standing on its dry grassland crest is an entirely different experience. The view sweeps roughly 270 degrees across the highlands, taking in Bambarakanda Falls, Sri Lanka's tallest waterfall, and the distant Horton Plains plateau in the same unbroken arc. For hikers who want a day in the hill country that feels genuinely earned, this is one of the best options the island offers outside the well-trodden trails of Adam's Peak. What makes Gommolli Kanda distinctive is that it is actually two peaks in sequence. The first summit, Gommolli proper, stands at 2,034 metres, while its companion Balathoduwa rises to 2,012 metres with a clearer top and what many consider the better panorama. Balathoduwa faces the opposite side of World's End, so you see that famous cliff from an angle no bus tour delivers. The intervening landscape between the two peaks is a mosaic of montane forest and windswept grassland, a habitat that feels far removed from the tea-plantation postcards most people associate with Sri Lankan hill country.
