Lake Piso
Lake Piso is the largest lake in Liberia, a wide, brackish tidal lagoon set against the Atlantic in Grand Cape Mount County, about 72 km west of Monrovia near the town of Robertsport. Roughly 31 km long and 16 km across, it sits behind a sandy spit that almost cuts it off from the sea, joined to the ocean only by a narrow inlet locals call the "bar mouth," while rivers such as Mole Creek and the Mafa feed its calm, mangrove-fringed water. What draws visitors is the lagoon's living wildness: a Ramsar wetland of international importance and an Important Bird Area, home to fish, herons, kingfishers, monkeys on forested islands, and the rare West African manatee that drifts in to breed. The best way to take it in is quietly, paddling out from Robertsport at first light in a local dugout canoe.
