Maletsunyane Falls
Maletsunyane Falls is one of the highest single-drop waterfalls in Southern Africa, plunging about 192 metres (630 ft) from a basalt ledge into a deep gorge near the highland town of Semonkong. The thundering water throws up clouds of mist so visible from the surrounding plateau that the town itself earned the name Semonkong, "a place of smoke." Beyond the view, the falls are famous as the home of the world's longest commercially operated single-drop abseil: a 204-metre rope descent run by Semonkong Lodge, complete with a Guinness World Records certificate. For most travellers, Maletsunyane is therefore both a scenic wonder and an adventure to book well in advance.
