Canyon Cijevna

Just a few kilometres from Podgorica’s urban buzz, Cijevna Canyon offers a dramatic shift into nature. This deep limestone gorge carves through the landscape with the rugged grandeur of the American West, earning its nickname, the 'Montenegrin Colorado.' It is a place where wild figs cling to steep cliffs, the river narrows to the width of a pipe, and the water runs ice-cold even in the height of summer. The canyon begins its life in the Prokletije Mountains across the border in Albania, traveling 58.8 kilometres to meet the Morača River. Along the way, it cuts through rock formations that sometimes exceed 1,000 meters in altitude. It is not just a scenic backdrop; it is a biological hub with over 800 plant species, serving as a vital habitat for birds of prey like the golden eagle and the Egyptian vulture. For travelers, the appeal lies in the variety of the experience. You can chase the waterfalls locally known as 'Niagara Falls,' where you can stand close enough to feel the spray, or simply swim in the refreshing pools near the city. The contrast is stark: the wild, vertical walls upstream give way to relaxed, sun-drenched spots for cooling off as the river widens towards the valley.

Blažo Jovanović Bridge

The Blažo Jovanović Bridge (Most Blaža Jovanovića) is Podgorica's busiest river crossing, a long concrete span carrying traffic over the Morača near the point where the smaller Ribnica joins it. Set along the city's main axis, Boulevard Saint Peter of Cetinje, it links the centre to the opposite bank and forms one chapter in a story of a city built on six rivers. Finished in 1950 and designed by the celebrated engineer-architect Branko Žeželj, the bridge is named after Blažo Jovanović, a Montenegrin revolutionary and national hero. Reconstructed in 1985 and again in 2009, when its railings were renewed and decorative lighting installed, it today reads as both a workaday piece of infrastructure and a mid-century landmark of the rebuilt capital.
