La Digue Alma
La Digue Alma is a quiet, local swimming hole on Mauritius's southern coast, set in the countryside around Dagotière between the sugarcane fields and the sea. Listed on maps as a swimming lake, it is one of those freshwater spots where islanders — rather than tour buses — come to cool off, splash about and spend a warm Sunday afternoon away from the resort lagoons of the north and west. It is not a developed attraction but an unmanaged stretch of water formed along a river embankment (the word digue itself means that causeway or wall across the river mouth). That simplicity is part of its appeal for visitors who want to see how Mauritians actually bathe: there are no ticket booths, no beach bars, no rows of loungers — just water, open sky and the rural south. Equally, that same lack of management is what you need to take seriously before getting in.
