Likangala River
The Likangala River is a 50-kilometre waterway in southern Malawi that tells the story of a landscape in miniature. Born among the forests and granite peaks of Zomba Mountain, it descends from 1,265 metres to 790 metres above sea level, threading through rural villages, the city of Zomba itself, and finally emptying into Lake Chilwa, a wetland of international significance designated under the Ramsar Convention. For travellers already exploring the Zomba Plateau, following the river downstream offers a different kind of adventure: one of deep pools where hippos rest, communities who give those pools sacred names, and a slow reveal of how this water shapes livelihoods all the way to the lake. The river is not a showpiece destination with ticket booths and viewing platforms. It rewards curious walkers and anyone who wants to understand southern Malawi at ground level. The stretch through Zomba town is where daily life meets the water; children collect jerrycans at the bank, and the rice irrigation scheme established in 1969 feeds 200 farming families across 415 hectares of paddies. Further downstream, the landscape opens into wetland, and the river becomes an ecological corridor where fish from Lake Chilwa migrate to spawn in pools as deep as 3.6 metres. This is a river you walk alongside rather than a river you photograph from a bridge, and that makes it memorable.
