Great Mosque of Niamey
The Grand Mosque of Niamey (Grande Mosquée de Niamey) is the biggest and busiest mosque in Niger's capital, a sun-bleached landmark of a green dome, tall minaret and latticed archways standing openly along Islam Avenue. Built over more than a decade from the late 1970s and completed in 1989, it is at once the spiritual heart of the city and one of its clearest skyline markers — an active Sunni mosque where Friday prayers and the two great Eids draw thousands, often including the country's leading figures. For a visitor it is less a hushed monument than a living crossroads of Niamey: worshippers flowing through a wide courtyard, the call to prayer rolling over low rooftops, and a 171-step minaret that, when access is offered, rewards the climb with a view across the city. It is a place to read Niger's modern history, its faith and its daily rhythm all at once.
