Krzywy Las
Just a few kilometers from the town of Gryfino in Western Pomerania, the Crooked Forest (Krzywy Las) offers a surreal glimpse into a botanical mystery. Here, a small grove of pine trees defies gravity and logic, with their trunks bending sharply at a 90-degree angle just above the ground before curving back upward to reach for the sky. This unique formation creates an eerie, fairy-tale atmosphere that has captivated photographers, scientists, and travelers from around the world. While the forest is compact, covering only about 0.5 hectares, the visual impact of the approximately 100 remaining curved pines is profound. The stark contrast between the twisted trunks of the central grove and the straight, normal pines surrounding it raises an immediate question: how did this happen? The answer remains one of Poland's most enduring natural puzzles, inviting visitors to weigh the evidence of human intervention against tales of war and weather.
