Ebiil Society
The Ebiil Society is not a monument or museum in the usual sense, but a working conservation-and-culture hub on the wild north of Babeldaob, in Ngarchelong State. Set near the village of Ollei at Palau's northern tip, it is the home base of a community-led NGO that protects the Ebiil Channel's reefs, restores forests, and uses Palauan tradition to teach children and visitors about their relationship with land and sea. Listed as a historical landmark, its true significance lies in the ancient sites and living stories it stewards. Founded in 2005 by Ann K. Singeo and named for the Ebiil Channel—an aggregation site where groupers and other reef fish gather—the Society operates an environmental studies campus with training facilities and residential rooms. For a traveller drawn to Palau beyond its postcard Rock Islands, Ebiil offers something rare: a chance to understand how an island community marries Indigenous knowledge with hands-on science, and to reach the quiet, storied reefs and sacred village grounds of northern Palau.
