Tabiya Omdurman (Historic Fort)
On the Nile at Omdurman stands a low earth-and-brick fort with a storied past: the Tabiya, a Mahdist strongpoint that once stared across the river at Khartoum and helped lay siege to it. Far older than any glass-and-steel museum, this is Sudan's modern history written in mudbrick, embrasures and gun-towers, on ground where the Mahdi himself once pitched his camp. The site is listed as a historical place and museum, sitting on Nile Street and shown on maps as open around the clock. What draws visitors is not a polished gallery but the sense of standing at a genuine piece of 19th-century military engineering, in the heart of the city that the Mahdist state made its capital.
