River Nile
River Nile State is the long, sun-baked reach of the Nile that links the capital Khartoum to Sudan's far north, threading through the great bend where the river curves around the Bayuda Desert. It is one of Sudan's eighteen states, a land of palm-lined villages, river ferries and desert horizons, and the home of the country's single most storied industrial town: Atbara, set exactly where the Nile drinks its very last tributary before running unbroken toward the Mediterranean. Travelers rarely cross this region for its administrative map, but for what the river corridor offers: a working Nile town with battered colonial-era railway architecture, an easy gateway to the steep-sided pyramids of Meroe, and an authentic, off-the-beaten-path glimpse of daily life along Sudan's great waterway. It rewards the curious far more than the comfort-seeker, and is best understood as a journey up the river rather than a single fixed sight.
