Gruve 3
Gruve 3 (Mine No. 3) is Longyearbyen's most atmospheric encounter with the Arctic coal town that built this settlement on 78° north. Run by the historic Norwegian coal company Store Norske, it invites visitors below the permafrost into a working mine where the machinery was simply left in place when production stopped. You pull on a helmet, headlamp and coverall, follow a guide through the surface plant and the dark tunnels, and come away understanding how—and why—people lived and dug coal at the edge of the polar night. The experience is paired with Taubanesentralen, the dramatic 1957 cableway station that was once the beating heart of Longyearbyen's coal operations. Together the two sites tell the full story: where the coal was cut underground, and how it was hauled across the valley to the town that grew up around it. With a 4.7 rating from hundreds of visitors, it has become one of Svalbard's signature cultural attractions.
