Baobab Sacré
The Sacred Baobab of Fadial is a colossal, hollow tree in the Serer village of Fadial, in Senegal's Thiès region. Standing at over 32 meters in circumference with a trunk formed from roughly ten fused pillars, this 850-year-old giant is considered one of the largest and oldest baobabs in West Africa. Visitors can squeeze through a narrow opening in its bark and step into a cathedral-like interior cavity, where bats roost overhead and the walls still carry the memory of its former role as a mausoleum for griots — the hereditary storytellers of Serer society. Located on the road between Joal-Fadiouth and Samba Dia in the Sine-Saloum area, the baobab has become a pilgrimage site for cultural tourists, local worshippers, and curious travelers making day trips from Dakar or the beach resorts around Saly. Guided entry, artisan stalls, and a restaurant on-site make it accessible and welcoming to families and solo visitors alike.
