Nugaal Valley
The Nugaal Valley (Somali: Dooxada Nugaal) is one of the great river valleys of the Horn of Africa — a sweeping, 250-kilometre-long basin carved into the limestone plateau of northern Somalia. Broad enough in places to span 100 kilometres, the valley drops between rising plateaus that reach up to 1,000 metres on its northern, western, and southern flanks, creating a dramatic sunken plain that opens eastward toward the Indian Ocean. This is land shaped by scarcity and resilience. Rainfall averages just 125 mm per year, and seasonal watercourses fill only briefly between April and June, yet the valley sustains a deep pastoral tradition built on camels, goats, and the frankincense and myrrh harvested from wild Commiphora trees. For travellers drawn to the vast and the little-known, the Nugaal offers an authentic window into one of Africa's most remote and ecologically distinctive landscapes.
