Nouri grand mosque
The Great Mosque of al-Nuri stands at the heart of Homs, Syria, on the very ground where the ancient Roman Temple of the Sun once stood — one of the most layered sacred sites in the Islamic world. Its story spans nearly two millennia: pagan sun temple, Byzantine church, and finally the grand Friday mosque that gave Homs its spiritual and civic identity for over a thousand years. Massive and architecturally imposing, the rectangular prayer hall stretches 100 meters and can accommodate seven thousand worshippers. Its courtyard preserves Roman columns with Corinthian capitals, a carved basalt basin possibly repurposed from an ancient sarcophagus, and a mihrab still bearing fragments of Umayyad-era mosaic. The mosque's tall square minaret, built from black basalt stone, was long a defining feature of Homs' skyline.
