Lac de Tikem

Tikem Lake is a wild, shape-shifting body of water in Chad's Mayo-Kebbi Est region that transforms from a modest 15-square-kilometre pool in the dry season to a sprawling 62-square-kilometre wetland during the rains. Sitting at roughly 320 metres elevation in the Toupouri depression, it is fed and drained by the Mayo Kébbi river, making it a living component of one of West Africa's most significant floodplain systems — part of the internationally recognised Ramsar wetland known as the Logone floodplains and Toupouri depressions. This is not a lake with a lakeside café or a paved path circling its shore. Tikem rewards the kind of traveller who gets genuine pleasure from remoteness: the waterfowl erupting from reed beds at dawn, the sight of gallery forest fragments clinging to the northern and eastern banks, and the raw beauty of a landscape that literally redraws itself every few months. It belongs on itineraries exploring the wetlands of southwestern Chad by travellers willing to drive local tracks from Bongor or Pala and bring their own supplies.

Bahr el-Ghazal

The Bahr el-Ghazal is a vast, 500-kilometre dry riverbed slicing across central Chad — a geological scar from when the world's largest lake overflowed and carved its escape route toward the desert. Today this wadi is a hard clay highway of emptiness, traversed by nomadic herders and intrepid overland travellers crossing between the Sahel and the high Sahara. What makes this landscape extraordinary is its deep-time story: only about 6,000 years ago, the floor of this valley lay beneath the waters of Mega-Chad, a lake larger than the modern Caspian Sea. The Bahr el-Ghazal was that ancient lake's spillway, draining northeast toward what is now the Bodélé Depression — the dustiest place on Earth. Every grain of Saharan dust that fertilises the Amazon rainforest began its journey through this system.
