Pic Engels

Engels Peak rises 6,510 metres above sea level in the Shakhdara Range of the South-Western Pamirs, deep within Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. Named after the German philosopher Friedrich Engels during the Soviet era — it was originally christened for Empress Maria Feodorovna — this is a mountain of stark beauty and punishing altitude, flanked by two major glaciers and looking across a narrow valley at its near-namesake, Karl Marx Peak. For trekkers, the main draw is not the summit — that is the business of major expeditions — but the extraordinary approach through a wild alpine meadow from the village of Zong, where the peak appears in full, snow-dusted grandeur above the valley floor. For climbers, Engels Peak represents a serious high-altitude objective in one of the most remote corners of Central Asia.

Yaghnob Valley

In a narrow canyon some 105 kilometres north of Dushanbe, squeezed between the Zarafshan and Hissar ranges of northern Tajikistan, the Yaghnob River has carved a 60-kilometre corridor of stone villages, terraced barley fields and glacier-fed emerald water. This is the home of the Yaghnobi people, direct descendants of the ancient Sogdians who once ran the trade of the Silk Road, and their mountain fastness is one of Central Asia's most quietly remarkable travel destinations. What makes Yaghnob exceptional is not just its raw, high-mountain scenery—limestone gorges, alpine meadows and the great wall of Zamin Qaror rising above the valley floor—but the living culture within it. Here you can hear a language that is the only surviving relative of Sogdian, the lingua franca the Silk Road once spoke, and stay in homestays built from slate where pre-Islamic fire rituals still linger beneath an everyday Muslim life.
