Gedik Ahmet Pasha Imaret Mosque
Set in a broad, leafy courtyard in the heart of Afyonkarahisar, the Gedik Ahmed Pasha Imaret Mosque is the city's finest Ottoman monument and one of Turkey's most atmospheric 15th-century interiors. Built in 1472 by a grand vizier of Mehmed the Conqueror, it preserves a rare 'reverse-T' hall plan, a striped marble portal, a slender spiral-fluted minaret, and a dazzling white-marmer minbar—all still in daily devotional use. What gives the building its popular name—Imaret, or 'charity kitchen'—is also its most heartwarming feature. True to the founder's original endowment, the complex has recently revived a centuries-old tradition of serving a free meal to roughly a thousand people after Friday prayers, open to anyone who comes. For a traveler, the mosque is both a piece of living Ottoman architecture and a window onto the city's oldest act of generosity.
