Funafuti

Funafuti is Tuvalu's capital atoll — a thin ribbon of coral and coconut palms wrapped around one of the largest lagoons in the Pacific. This is not a postcard destination with curated viewpoints and gift shops. It is the real thing: a sliver of land where the entire town gathers on an airport runway each evening, where the national game is te ano (a two-team ball sport played barefoot on sand), and where fewer than a few thousand foreign visitors arrive per year. The lagoon shifts through more shades of blue than you can name. The coral beneath it was once drilled to settle a scientific argument between Darwin and his critics. The country's biggest income stream comes from leasing its two-letter internet domain, .tv. Funafuti is one of those rare places where geography, history, and absurdity collide into something genuinely memorable. If you want a travel story that nobody else at dinner will be able to match, a handful of days on Funafuti will give you one. You snorkel uninhabited islets where green turtles nest, watch seabird colonies that drown out your conversation, and eat fresh reef fish cooked by a family who lives a stone's throw from the water. The atoll rewards travelers who arrive with patience and curiosity rather than an itinerary packed with attractions. It is slow, intimate, and unforgettable.
