Layou Petroglyph Park
On the storm-ravaged west coast of St. Vincent, where the rainforest-clad Rutland Vale meets the Layou River, a single massive boulder carries the most ambitious piece of stone art ever carved in the Lesser Antilles. Layou Petroglyph Park preserves these deep-set faces and swirling figures, scratched by the island's pre-Columbian peoples perhaps 1,400 to 1,700 years ago, and lets visitors walk a short riverside trail to stand beside them. It is a rare chance to read the surviving artwork of the Caribbean's first settlers in its original forest setting.
The carvings are on St. Vincent's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage, recognized as part of a chain of rock-art sites that link the islands of the Antilles to the South American mainland. Managed by the National Parks, Rivers and Beaches Authority alongside the local Layou Heritage and Tourism Organisation, the park pairs its ancient stones with a lush valley walk, a natural bathing pool and a riverside picnic spot, so the visit feels like a gentle nature stroll as much as a heritage stop.
