Prizren Fortress
Perched on a conical hill above Prizren's old town, the fortress is a palimpsest of more than 3,500 years of human settlement — from Bronze Age dwellings to Illyrian fortifications, Roman defensive walls, Byzantine strongholds, Serbian medieval acropolis, and Ottoman garrison. The first written mention comes from the 6th-century Byzantine chronicler Procopius, who recorded the fort as Petrizen, rebuilt under Emperor Justinian I as part of Dardania's frontier system. Today the fortress is Kosovo's most visited heritage site, with free admission, panoramic viewpoints over the city and the Prizren River, an archaeological exhibition housed inside the main building, and an open-air cinema screen during the internationally known Dokufest documentary film festival. It was declared a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1948.
