Dziani Karihani
Tucked between the villages of Tsingoni and Combani on the central plateau of Mayotte, Dziani Karihani is the island's only natural freshwater lake — a quiet, shimmering anomaly in a territory where the turquoise lagon commands all attention. Set in a volcanic depression and fed entirely by rainfall, this seven-hectare wetland is one of the most biologically concentrated spots in the Comoros archipelago, second only to the mudflats of Badamiers for the sheer number of bird species it supports. The lake's Shimaore name — Kariha, meaning the common moorhen — tells you immediately what dominates its ecosystem: waterbirds. A ring of dense aquatic vegetation, including water lilies and a rare protected orchid, fringes the shallows, while a wooden observation hide on the shore lets you watch the avian drama unfold at close range without disturbing it. The 1.5 km walking loop around the lake takes under an hour on flat, easy terrain.
