AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Meghna River Side is a small river port on the banks of the Lower Meghna at Mehendiganj, in Bangladesh's Barisal Division. Visitors come here for the wide-open river views, the peaceful rhythm of delta life, and a front-row seat to the daily theatre of wooden boats, launches, and ferries that still form the backbone of transport in this riverine region. With a near-perfect visitor rating, this quiet ghat captures something essential about southern Bangladesh: life shaped by the water.↗↗
The River That Shapes a Region
The Meghna is one of Bangladesh's three great rivers, and downstream of Chandpur where it merges with the Padma (the main distributary of the Ganges), it becomes the Lower Meghna — a waterway reaching up to 13 kilometres wide, making it the widest river entirely within Bangladesh's borders. At Mehendiganj, the river carries the combined flow of the Ganges-Padma, Brahmaputra-Jamuna, and Meghna systems toward the Bay of Bengal through the world's largest delta. Standing on the riverbank here means facing a body of water so vast that the far shore often dissolves into haze.↗↗
