AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Bedenski Bani is a hyperthermal mineral spring in the heart of Bulgaria's central Rhodope Mountains, where water that emerges at well over 70°C is piped straight into modest pools set in a river valley some ten-odd kilometres east of the town of Devin. It is not a polished spa resort but a genuine local bathing spot, prized for the healing quality of its water and the high-mountain air that surrounds it.↗↗
Visitors come here to soak aching joints and tired backs in the mineral-rich water, then wander a region packed with caves and old Rhodope villages. The experience is simple and unpretentious: a small public bath at the spring itself, and a newer guesthouse with an indoor mineral pool and an outdoor hot tub that looks out over the peaks.↗↗
A mountain spring with very old roots
The springs of Beden have been known for a long time. According to the Ministry of Tourism, a spring was first captured here as far back as 1911, and a simple bath was raised on the foundations of an older bathhouse described in local tradition as Roman. Further boreholes followed through the 1940s and again in the late 1950s and 1960s, the deepest reaching more than 400 metres into the cracked metamorphic rock of the Rhodope.
