AT A GLANCE
Why go?
On the northern shoulder of Santa Catarina Island, Sambaqui Beach (Praia de Sambaqui) trades the roar of Florianópolis's surf beaches for the quiet lap of a sheltered bay. It is an "internal" beach of the Baía Norte, so the water lies calm and shallow over fine sand, framed by low green hills and dotted with small fishing boats. The village around it is one of the oldest on the island, built by Azorean settlers and still defined by that heritage.↗↗↗
What draws visitors today is a rare combination: a gentle swimming beach, a working fishing and oyster-farming community, and one of the most celebrated sunsets on the island, where the sun drops toward the mainland behind the Hercílio Luz bridge. Long tables of seafood—fresh oysters, mussels, moqueca and grilled fish—line the shore, making Sambaqui a natural lunch-and-sunset stop rather than a full-day party beach.↗↗↗
