Balcony House Museum

AT A GLANCE

Why go?

On Market Street in the heart of downtown Nassau stands the oldest surviving wooden house in The Bahamas: Balcony House, a roughly 220-year-old Loyalist-era residence whose free-standing timber balcony—held up by curving knee braces—gives the building its name. Now a period museum, it lets you step inside two and a half centuries of Bahamian history, from the arrival of the Loyalists to the rise of pioneering political figures, and it's a rare, intimate counterpoint to the beach-and-resort image of the islands.↗↗

Restored and run in partnership between the Central Bank of The Bahamas and the Antiquities Monuments & Museums Corporation, the house is displayed as a furnished period home with stately pieces and unique objects, and rotating exhibitions weave its documents and artifacts together with works drawn from the Bank's art collection. Admission is free, the setting is small and walkable, and the adjacent former outdoor kitchen has been reborn as a welcoming Teahouse Café—making this an easy, rewarding half-hour stop on a day of exploring Nassau.↗↗↗

Why This Old House Matters

Balcony House is the oldest existing wooden residential building in The Bahamas. It was raised around the 1780s–1790s, when a new wave of settlers—the American Loyalists who left the thirteen colonies after the Revolution—reshaped the archipelago's society, economy and architecture. The balcony that fronts Market Street (once called Prison Lane), supported by elegant wooden knee braces, is a signature feature of those 18th-century Loyalist builders, and it's the detail that gave the house its name.↗↗

In 1985 the Central Bank of The Bahamas acquired the building and underwrote its careful restoration, completed in the early 1990s. Working with the national heritage authorities, it opened the doors as the Balcony House Museum in 1994, so today you can visit a preserved monument rather than a reconstruction.↗

Stories in the Rooms

The house's trail of owners reads like a condensed history of the Bahamas. The earliest recorded residents were the Hardy family in the 1780s, but the most storied is Stephen Dillet, a Haitian-born Bahamian who bought the property in 1841 and lived here until his death in 1880. Dillet was a true pioneer: in 1833 he became the first coloured person to win election as representative for the Town of Nassau—going on to win seven consecutive elections—and later served as Postmaster General and as the country's first Black member of the Legislative Council, alongside roles in the community, the cathedral and Freemasonry.↗

Later chapters include a lease to the newspaper magnate Lord Beaverbrook and ownership by Marie Josephine Bryce, an American heiress to the A&P grocery fortune, who brought in a New York interior-design firm to restyle the inside. Visitors on the house's guided tours meet these names and the artefacts that trace them, and the interior is presented as a period home with stately furnishings and distinctive objects.↗↗

What to See and Do

The museum's programme keeps the old walls in conversation with the present. Its 2025 exhibition, "Balcony House – Revisited," thoughtfully merges historical documents and artifacts with contemporary works from the Central Bank's art collection, offering fresh angles on figures like Dillet and Bryce and on the features that make the building a national treasure.↗

Don't miss the little garden and the former outdoor kitchen beside the house, now transformed into the inviting Teahouse Café—a pleasant place to pause over a drink after the tour. The setting also places you amid some of downtown Nassau's most photogenic heritage: just up the way is Gregory's Arch, a carved stone gateway in the old Over-the-Hill district, while directly across the street sits the Central Bank Art Gallery, the country's main public space for Bahamian visual art. Pairing the house with the gallery makes for a compact culture half-day.↗↗↗

Planning Your Visit

Balcony House sits on Market Street just off Bay Street, within easy reach of downtown Nassau's shopping and historic core. Admission is free of charge, and the museum opens weekday mornings to mid-afternoon and is closed weekends and public holidays—so plan a visit Monday to Friday. Guided tours are offered by the heritage authorities, which is the best way to hear the house's layered stories. As with any historic wooden building, the interior is compact and steps can be uneven, so take your time; entry is at ground level but the building is an older monument rather than a fully accessible modern site.↗↗↗

Because it takes only around half an hour, the museum fits neatly into a day of cruising-ship shore excursions, a walk along Bay Street, or a foray into the Over-the-Hill area—giving you a more human, historical side of Nassau between the beaches.
