AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Moose Lake is a small, serene body of water tucked into the Maligne Valley of Jasper National Park, sitting at roughly 1,729 metres and framed by dense mountain forest. It is the quieter neighbour of the much larger, more celebrated Maligne Lake nearby, and for many visitors that low-key calm is exactly the appeal: clear water, bird calls and long stretches of solitude rather than crowds.↗↗
You reach it on foot rather than by car, on a short forest loop that most people finish in under an hour. It makes a rewarding side-stop when you are already visiting Maligne Lake, and an easy introduction to Jasper's wooded trails for families and beginner hikers.↗↗
A quiet lake behind the crowds
Where Maligne Lake draws cruise boats and photo queues, Moose Lake keeps things small and still. Visitors consistently describe it as peaceful and easy to have to yourself, a clear, glassy pool hemmed in by thick spruce and pine forest. There are no dramatic named viewpoints here; the experience is the gentle walk through the woods and the reward of reaching a calm, reflective surface that feels a world away from the main valley road.
