AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Sunset Beach earns its name honestly. This small beach community sits on the east shore of Lake Winnipeg, about an hour's drive northeast of Winnipeg, where a wide sandy shoreline meets shallow, gently lapping water and the sky puts on a long, slow show as the day ends. It is a quiet cottage-country beach rather than a resort strip—the kind of place Manitobans slip away to for a swimming afternoon, a picnic on the sand, and the sunset that everyone seems to wait for.
A beach pavilion gives the shoreline a shaded gathering point, and a network of walking and biking trails follows the water and links the surrounding cottage subdivisions, so a visit can be as active or as lazy as you like. With Grand Beach and the services of Grand Marais a short drive away, Sunset Beach works both as a destination in itself and as a laid-back base along one of Manitoba's favourite lake shores.↗
A Lake Winnipeg sunset shore
Lake Winnipeg is enormous—big enough that the far shore can vanish into haze—yet its east shoreline south of Grand Beach has a soft, intimate feel. Here the water stays shallow for a good way out, the sand is pale and broad, and the whole place is built around the simple pleasures of summer: wading, floating, building sandcastles, and claiming a spot on the beach with a blanket and a cooler. It's an unincorporated cottage community more than a town, which is part of its charm: there's no congestion, no ticket booth, just the lake, the breeze, and the slow arc of light over the water.
