AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Ballenberg is Switzerland's answer to a time machine you can walk through: a vast open-air museum above Brienz in the canton Bern where more than 100 historic rural buildings, brought here from every corner of the country and carefully rebuilt, recreate the way the Swiss lived, farmed and worked for centuries. Farmhouses, craftsmen's houses, barns, granaries, bakehouses and earth cellars stand grouped by region, and their interiors are stocked with tools, furniture and everyday objects from before 1950, so stepping through a doorway really does drop you into another era.↗↗↗
This is a museum with a pulse: in its historic workshops over 30 traditional crafts are actively demonstrated, pastures and stables are home to more than 200 farm animals, and roughly 10 km of discovery trails wind through a living cultural landscape that rewards a full day out. It is one of the country's most beloved draws for families and for anyone curious about rural Swiss heritage.↗↗
