AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Raemaru is a distinctive flat-topped mountain peak on the west coast of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, rising 357 meters above sea level. Its summit rewards hikers with spectacular 360-degree panoramas over the turquoise lagoon, patchwork farmlands, and the vast Pacific Ocean.↗↗
The Raemaru Track is widely regarded as the easiest peak to climb on Rarotonga and one of the island's most rewarding short hikes. The approximately 3.1-kilometre return trail winds through lush jungle canopy before emerging onto a dramatic ridgeline, where the optional final challenge is a 15-metre rock-face scramble aided by fixed ropes and steel bars.↗↗
The Legend of the Stolen Summit
According to Cook Islands legend, Raemaru was once the tallest mountain on Rarotonga and was called Maru. The island of Aitutaki, which was completely flat at the time, sent warriors across the sea at night to steal the mountain's peak and carry it back to their own island. After four days of arduous labour, they reached Aitutaki and placed their prize in the village of Amuri — though many pieces fell off during the journey, reducing the stolen portion to a mere hill. The Aitutakians renamed it Maunga Pu, meaning "top of the mountain," in remembrance of their feat. Raemaru's flat top and Aitutaki's hill are said to be the evidence of this legendary theft still visible today.
