AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Yaoundé is called the city of seven hills, and Mont Mbankolo is one of its most rewarding climbing experiences. Rising to roughly 1,100 metres above sea level, this peak sits right inside the capital's urban fabric, which means you can leave a hotel in the neighbourhoods below and be scrambling through forest trails and across farmland within minutes. The climb takes you from dusty residential streets past cassava and maize plots, through patches of wild vegetation, and finally up a rocky outcrop to a summit crowned with telecommunication antennas. It is not a pristine wilderness walk; it is something more interesting: a hike that reveals how Yaoundé lives, eats, and breathes at the seams between neighbourhood and hillside.↗↗
For a weekend in the Cameroonian capital, Mont Mbankolo offers a physical challenge that is moderate but memorable. The full ascent takes around seventy minutes on foot from the foot of the hill, with the steep sections requiring genuine effort and a sure grip on smooth granite. The descent follows a cemented switchback road, which is far gentler on the knees. Combined with nearby Mont Fébé, the loop covers roughly eight kilometres and just under four hours, making it the most substantial outdoor activity you can slot into a day in Yaoundé without leaving the city.
