AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Perched on the Loma del Puerto at the edge of Trinidad, the Mirador del Valle de los Ingenios — also known as El Balcón del Valle de los Ingenios — is the panorama point from which the whole story of Cuba's sugar empire unfolds at a glance. In one sweeping look south, you take in the San Luis Valley, the remnants of colonial-era sugar plantations scattered across roughly 270 square kilometres, the forested shoulders of the Escambray Mountains, and — on a clear day — the blue line of the Caribbean Sea.↗↗↗↗
The valley below was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Site in 1988 together with Trinidad's colonial old town, so this viewpoint is effectively the opening act for any visit to the area. A short drive from the centre of Trinidad, the Mirador combines that big-picture viewing with a genuinely fun canopy zip-line and an on-site café run by Palmares, making it easy to spend an unhurried morning or golden-hour afternoon here.↗
