AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Filey Zoo is a small, family-run attraction on the edge of the North Yorkshire coast town of Filey, where more than 75 species of exotic and domestic animals, birds and reptiles live amid manicured gardens and a wildflower meadow. Originally opened in 2008 as Filey Bird Garden & Animal Park, it has grown into an award-winning day out that is deliberately sized to suit little legs and older ones alike.↗↗
Set across five spacious acres, the zoo pairs up-close encounters with a genuinely relaxing garden walk: you can feed a donkey or a greedy goat one minute, then sit among aviaries full of colourful songbirds the next. Keeper talks run daily, the staff are widely praised as friendly and knowledgeable, and visitors consistently call it excellent value for money.↗↗
A garden you walk through with wildlife
The defining charm of Filey Zoo is that it is as much a garden as a menagerie. The smaller birds are housed in aviaries set within the formal gardens, so their cages sit among bushes and flowers and the whole site feels like a pleasant stroll rather than a row of concrete enclosures. Add a wildflower meadow, plenty of seating in sun or shade, and a butterfly walk beside the children's playground, and you have somewhere that invites you to slow down and look a little closer.
