AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Just minutes from the coast road east of Cayenne, the Sentier du Rorota drops you straight into primary Amazonian rainforest without a long drive into the interior. This marked loop trail, set on the forested slopes around the Mahury massif in Rémire-Montjoly, is the single most popular hike in French Guiana—thousands of locals and visitors walk it every month—and it earns that reputation. In roughly an hour and a half to two, you climb through tangled green canopy, pass a string of mirror-still reservoir lakes, cross little streams and waterfalls, and emerge at ridgeline lookouts that open onto the Atlantic.↗↗↗
The genius of the Rorota is how much it packs into a short, easy walk. It is an ideal first taste of Guianese rainforest for travellers based in Cayenne: comfortable enough for families and casual walkers, yet rich in wildlife, water and viewpoints that reward staying alert to your surroundings. It is also a starting point for longer hikes, linking on to the Fort Diamant and Cascade de Cayenne routes if you want to push your day further into the hills.↗↗
