AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Moorish Castle dominates Gibraltar's skyline with its formidable Tower of Homage — a whitewashed fortress that has stood guard over the Rock for nearly 700 years. As the tallest Islamic-era tower in the Iberian Peninsula and the largest keep in the region, it represents one of the most significant military structures in western European history.↗↗
Built by the Marinid dynasty in the early 14th century, this extraordinary fortress narrates the longest chapter of Gibraltar's recorded story — 727 years of Muslim occupation that began the Islamic conquest of Iberia. The castle complex once swept from the upper slopes of the Rock all the way to the sea, and surviving portions still trace that dramatic descent through gates, walls, and terraces.↗↗
A Fortress That Changed Europe
The Moorish Castle sits on ground that holds enormous historical weight. It was from Gibraltar that Tariq ibn Ziyad launched the Muslim conquest of Iberia in 711 AD — an invasion that overran most of the peninsula in just two decades and led to Islamic domination of parts of western Europe for over seven centuries. The very name "Gibraltar" derives from Jabal Ṭāriq, the "Mountain of Tariq," and the castle is the physical embodiment of that turning point in European history.
